Victory!
Eid Mubarek! My best wishes to you and your families!
I had my exam on September 22 and it went well. Actually, reaaaally well. Beside myself, I have to thank for this the British Council for the preparation course and, especially, Tony Beale. After drafting this contribution, I counted eleven “Thank you, Tony!” across the text. To make the situation less embarrassing, I will say it once and strong:
THANK YOU, TONY!
The “extra” you added on top of the course meant a lot in the balance of the exam.
Instead of the DOs and DON'Ts (thoroughly covered during the course), I will concentrate on the “expected” and “unexpected”, the little things which can affect positively or negatively your exam day.
As you should already know, exam day starts at 9am in a room capable to host a large number of candidates for the written exams. In my case, it was Arzanah Ballroom at Sheraton Hotel and candidates were about 200.
Well, I expected a little crowding at the entrance, where people had also to store their belongings (nothing but pencils, rubbers and sharpeners was allowed in the room). What I did not expect was a delay in starting of the exam. Not much, but enough to play with your exam frame of mind.
LISTENING exam followed the procedure described during the course. Expected, but not desired, was missing by me of some answers. Not expected were some CD player technical difficulties and too loud sound. I was seated close to one of the room’s corners where one of the speakers was placed. In order to provide all the candidates with a minimum volume, people closer to speakers had to endure sound bombardment. Good for listening, very bad for your brain. Mine “vroom”-ed all day. I got band 8.5, so I assume improvisation for the missed spots helped.
No surprises during READING. The only difference compared to practice tests was the high percentage of TRUE, FALSE, NOT GIVEN questions. Applying the course techniques, I could finish in 40 minutes, so a lot of time was left for checking and transferring the answers. I encountered one unknown word which was essential for the meaning of the sentence and if I used it incorrectly might have generated one of the wrong answers. I got band 8.5.
WRITING exam was one of my concerns, especially if I was not so accustomed with the subjects. But, I was lucky, both the essay and the letter were juicy enough to provide arguments and ideas for at least 250, and 150 respectively, words. I got band 8.5
When I applied for the IELTS test mentioned that SPEAKING was going to start at 1pm. After Writing, I was informed that I was scheduled for 5:50pm. Good, because it was a clear personal not a group appointment, bad, because it was a dramatic change in day’s schedule and it was also extending the stress of the exam day. To add to the drama, I received a phone call around 4pm to come as soon as possible to fill in an opening resulted from some cancellations. I took the opportunity, but at the expense of my appearance, which I consider was not fresh enough, especially after quickly crossing half of the city. The exam itself seemed longer than expected, but I suppose the examiner wanted a better contact with my English. Unexpected was also the short time the examiner needed to bring me in a comfort zone. Subjects suited me (somehow unexpected) and, so, the examiner had difficulties to stop my verbal flow. Retrospectively, I think I might have been a little bit impolite trying to impose too much. I got band 9.0.
Receiving the results was a stressful job. Instructions received earlier mentioned collecting the results on October 4 from British Council, opposed to receiving the results by Empost courier as informed during the exam day. Nothing happened on 4th or on 5th. Conflicting information received from British Council toll free number and Empost added to the stress. Finally, on 6th, I went to Empost to collect the results to spare one or two more days.
Even though the overall band 8.5 is very good and satisfactory for my purpose, I have to look at this result in the context of the General Training test. To speak good English, I still have to work a lot.
Good luck with your exams.
Yours truly,
Vladimir Baranovschi

Eid Mubarek
May this auspicious time help you realise your dreams and strive even harder to surmount life's obstacles.
I have been 'lying low' and enjoying a very peaceful Ramadan. The interesting news is that I will be starting ieltscommunity22 next week when I kick off, In Sha Allah, a new three week intensive IELTS course on 21 October. Plenty of football (round and oval ball variety) before then to enjoy. My beloved football team, Watford FC, are doing very well this season - find out all about them in my local Uk newspaper www.watfordobserver.co.uk and find out about where I come from and what is happening in my home town! Isn't the Internet an amazing tool?
Watch this space!
Bye for now, off Eid visiting (won't eat too much baqlawa!)

1. Should sports classes be sacrificed in High School so students can concentrate on Academic subjects?
The fitness is most important think for every one; the continuous periodic exercises need a certain level of tenacity. By sport classes this insistence can be planted, and the sport will be an important habit, moreover sport classes can form a good relation ship with trainers, So the teachers can help thime to solve their personal problems. On top of that, sports are refreshed their mined and increase their effectiveness. Finally the team games are strengthening student's relationships and increase their feeling in work team. The management in my secondary school gives special attention to sport classes, and sport teacher has the best link to the students.(107)
The opponent are believe that, the time and money invest in these action are useless, they add the sports can be done on personal bases, secondly high schools have general sport program which is not necessary fit with all. Finally the competitive in sport between the students can generate unreasonable hate some times.(53)
In conclusion, sport lessons are necessary to build a healthy environment, and to improve the student strength, privacy in training program can be considered in some cases, Schools are not recourse for information only, but they are responsible to product healthy society.(43)

writting task for your comments WRITING not WRITTING
I understand how much you are busy, But any comment from your side will be highly appreciated . Fair enough, Ahmed, Ramadan takes its toll, I'm afraid
Forests are the lungs of the world. destruction of the forests amounts to death of the world we know it. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
There is no doubt that the green areas are the natural factories for oxygen. Damaging these factories will dramatically affect our world. This essay will examine the strong bond between forests' healthy status and our life in this world. (38) [Sensible opening Ahmed: short, simple and clear - well done!]
Forests are considered one of the living natural environments for many types of animals, fowls and insects. The woods are the natural home for all these type of creatures, and they can be considered as direct or indirect source of their food. All these creatures live in an amazing balance; even the strongest animal can not live independently without the weakest animal. And at the end the ?????????? [Yes it is going well, but you are two sentences short for this paragraph](78)
All the creators!!! are consuming oxygen continuously to generate the required energy for their daily lives, so carbon dioxide will be a result for this action. However, this gas is important for the plants to produce their food but it has two dangerous effects on the human beings' lives: firstly, this gas is a killer poison for the people. Secondly, increasing the carbon dioxide percentage in the atmosphere is enabling the air to act as a greenhouse, which leads to a dramatic rise in the earth's temperature, while also raising sea levels to the dangerous limits to threaten many coastal cities. (For instance that the people every where feel that the average of climate temperature is increased - this sentence is repetitive and meaningless, sorry!). [Hmmm, try not to get too technical Mr Mechanical Engineer - you are repeating yourself and using words incorrectly - all this brings your mark down. Rewrite this essay with my corrections and compare it to your original text]
(115)
In conclusion, although the development is the aim of civilization, which lead to product more carbon dioxide, but more investment to improve the forests must be the nations goal as it is the only tools keeping the stability of air containment limit, otherwise we will leave a damage environment to the next generations.(53) Ahmed, a 53-word sentence as a conclusion! You are making life very difficult for yourself and the examiner! Compare my conclusion below to yours:
In conclusion, we cannot stop progress, nor should we attempt to do so. We need to invest to protect the forests for our children's children by controlling greenhouse gas emissions. This must be our legacy, not a death sentence for the planet. (42 words / three sentences / strong message)

The revised writing task two
I was planning to keep the first try, and mail you anew corrected copy ,But by mistake the corrections done on the original copy! you will note the additional words in red while the gray color is represent to deleted words. Are you agree with me for this correction? for all other please read as in blue and gray colors.
The revised task considers mostly the syntactic mistakes
Dear Captain,
I need your help to improve my writing skill (a gain I get 5 in writing but my band still 6),bellow is the writing task No.two which I had in September IELTS test.kindly review and comment my essay.and highlight to me how can I improved it. this invitation is open to all.especially Firas Khowla and Maha.the subject was as I remember ( many universities are sending their student for practice training in the companies, what the advantages and disadvantages in your opinion).
Most of the universities send their students to build up their practice experience in different factories, schools, hospitals and so on. I believe this action is introducing(introduce) the trainers to the actual working live, and this essay will highlight the advantages and disadvantages of such process.
In my opinion sending the students for training is essential step toward the success in actual working live, this action in fact(fills) is filling the lake in practice gab which is cannot be totally covered in colleges and institutes, where the teaching programs is highly concentrate on the theoretical face of the acknowledgment. Moreover holding actual responsibility in training field is planting dependability feel, and unable them to impalement the theoretical lessons they got. On top of that dealing with high qualified staff (will help to transfer ) is transferring the information smoothly to the trainers and improve their skills. (Until now)I remember until now that I had very (the) valuable training month when I joined the Solar Energy Research Center, from there staff I gain a useful advices.
The opponents is argue that inserting non graduate young people in actual field is risky for themselves, or the other(s) or to the companyies itself, exposing the non qualified people to construction projects without learning them the required safety protection may lead to disaster ,same think (for)in the factory(ies) without close supervision the trainers could Makes-a-mistake costing money,or time or health of employees, and the more sensitive field is (the ) hospital(s) and schools where the trainers will be in direct touch with the patient(s) or pupil.
In conclusion training the student is vital part of teaching process and it should tack(s) more consideration from the universities, institutes and all other concern authorities in the country as the students will be the tools (to improve the society) of improving tomorrow. (293 words)

My summer was splendid, relaxing and very enjoyable. Now, alas, we are all 'back to reality' - with a VENGEANCE!
Unless you contribute, this blog is 'dead in the water'!
I do not envisage starting a new IELTS course and consequent new blog until after Ramadan - i.e. well into October.

Tony the gentleman / Ahmed the scholar
Please Tony, a small request, try to illuminate to your friends the spirit of Arabic and Islamic civilization.
A lot of Western people cried because of the Bulgarian nurses, it is good that they are happy now, as we, to liberate all nurses back home with their families. On the other hand, very few Westerners evaluate seriously the Libyan children's tragedy. Moreover the highly educated Americans leaders are discussing whether and when to withdraw from Iraq, regardless of the Iraqis' daily problems. Our oil barrels are more expensive than our children's tears or blood.
Finally, please tell every one that Andalusia is the Arabic and Islamic civilization imprint in Europe, while the new Iraq and Afghanistan are the Western civilization's legacy. Please check if the Europeans are still dreaming expecting thanks and flowers because they brought us democracy? I think not.
Ahmed Al-Qassab
Dear Ahmed
Your words above srike a chord in my heart! Like many fellow Brits, I have been overwhelmed by the warmth and kindness of our Arab hosts - I did even better, I married an Arab beauty from Baghdad and am proud to have joined East and West together with four stunning daughters.
Indeed, I will spread the message that the suffering of the Iraqi, Palestinian, North African and Afghan people goes on unabated. The critical point I want to make is not to let bitterness and cynicism cloud your eyes. So many people in my country opposed the war in Iraq or believed it was the right thing to do to oust Saddam; yet they are all appalled at what has happened and is happening in their 'name'. Please make a distinction between the people and the politicians. In Britain, a lot of the population are very well-informed and do not swallow the 'spin' and 'propaganda' spewed out by the likes of Blair and Bush . The former is history, so too will the latter be very soon. The current tragedy in Iraq and the growing one in Afghanistan will take years to sort out. Investment in providing security, health, amenities, jobs, education and a clean environment is what these war-ravaged countries need. Soldiers can never solve the mess politicians make for them.
In time we shall all meet, In Sha Allah, one day on the banks of the Tigris and toast the new Iraq! When that day comes, the pain and sacrifice of recent years will have proved worthwhile. All this, however, is no consolation for the current disastrous situation in Iraq.
One great piece of news: I watched the match vs Korea and was thrilled, truly ecstatic, to see your brave lads go through to the Asian Cup Final - 'elf mabrook'!
I fly to England, In Sha Allah, tomorrow and will try to bring some glorious Gulf sunshine to my rainsodden, dispirited country men and women!
Bye for now
Hang on in there!

Yasser essay
I am Maha from IELTSCOMMUNITY 19. I read your essay and tried to understand your points and felt that you did not put your spirit in this essay, allow me to say that you were very passive and you did not give clearly your opinion.
As per Tony's advice and since worked with me when I did my IELTS test (I got Band 7 for writing), I think you should always weigh the positive and the negative sides of every subject and favour something, and show it to the one who reads your essay.
From the introduction till the end, you were talking about the scientists and research but did not say by experience for instance in your country if they set rules against working children or that is something very common. I would say that every country should set clear rules against working children, they should ban this bad habits and they should monitor companies, mills and working fields to ensure that there are no children under the age of 15 years working without getting proper schooling and have good environment to grow and ensure good future.
I may try and write this essay myself and publish it enabling yourself, Tony everybody else to discuss further this important subject.
Hope i wrote something helpful.

Maha Hanna

(NOT just) for Mr. Tony (only) + Tony's surgical re-write
What do you so silent readers have to say?
Former students: you are administrators now and can EDIT posts. It would be wonderful if you commented upon and edited Yasser's essay on the pros and cons of children doing paid work. It was the first task 2 essay for Academic IELTS candidates that I gave you. The title was:
In many countries children are engaged in some kind of paid work. Some people regard this as completely wrong, while others consider it as valuable work experience, important for learning and taking responsibility.
What are your opinions on this?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Write at least 250 words.
I shall try to respond to Yasser's super initiative in posting this essay, well done Yasser!
Tony
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Working of Children Benefits & limitations
One of the most challenging problems of today’s society in many countries is children working either wages paid or not paid, also difference of the communities’ opinions who are supporting or discouraging that behavior. I would like to analyze to different teams.
Firstly, I’ll talk about audience who is against the totally subject, some people looking adversely for working of children depending on many reasons I’ll display in this session. There are two types of children, one of them who studying in schools and working after finishing their classes. Those students are not doing well because they haven’t enough time to review their tasks and lessons, even though they are losing the opportunities of playing sports and intellectual exercises and games, which are very important for them to help to grow, improve their skills of personality and confidence,
And that what the scientists studies and researches mentioned and recommended for the early stage of the childhood life.
Another type of students who never joint to school and working in a job or craft in a shop, grocery, carpentry and farms, which mainly due to the bad financial position for their families and some time this, refers to social believes, traditions and cultures.
These families irrespective of helps and supports of their local and international governments; they refuse to send the children to learn and progress.
Very important thing I want to mention, if the children work in their free time by their choice with consent of their families supposing they don’t have financial problems, the children will have a wealth they consider when they are comparing with daily petty cash expenses, which make them searching for many ways to expense them maybe it will be bad things, harm for them and dangerous, such as eating some kinds of chocolates more than ten pieces in one day which really offer their life for dangerous and some times to death , another example they buy some kinds of weapons from sharp knife to guns.
Secondly, I’ll speak about the team who encouraging working of the children with some types of paid works, they thinks its valuable and make the children more expert when they deal with customers and variety of people from different cultures and different socials levels. Moreover the people who are satisfied with this opinion, suggest that pupils should join to any job or craft to make their minds opened to the world and, they could plan their future and what they want to be when the child become man and what the carrier he likes more and the possibilities of achievement of his dreams. And this will shift the child from world of imagining to the world of reality and prepare the child when he becomes man to be responsible for him self, family and subordinates. Also the work of children will give them the trust by them selves and self esteem which a lot of people still try to achieve.
In conclusion, I think there are many advantages & disadvantages of working of children that I advice all families and parents taking care of them when they decide to let their children joining in some kind of paid work, especially in the summer holidays. [536 words]
One of the most challenging problems in today’s world is children working either paid or not paid. Opinions differ as to this practice. In this essay I propose to look at both sides of the argument.
In the first place, there are those children who study and go to school. As I see it, this impacts on their performance at school and involvement in the full range of school activities during these formative years. Whereas, there are those children who drop out of school to work full-time to support their families. In my country,
From the opposing point of view, it is argued that children benefit from work experience and helps them adjust to participating in the adult world. It could lead to careers in the future and open children’s horizons accordingly. Such paid work teaches the child to assume responsibility and develop their confidence and self esteem. When I was growing up in
In conclusion, I think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages regarding children doing paid work. However I caution parents to research thoroughly any part-time jobs that they let their children do during school holidays or throughout the academic year.
Seize the weekend!
Greetings from your 'captain' as I have been titled by previous blogs.
You must use these four days to re-charge your batteries and connect with your loved ones. At the same time, at the back of your mind, you KNOW that you should be:
- organising your folder and handouts into 10 categories
- joining the weblog
- contributing to the weblog
- starting your vital VOCABULARY lists
- studying those READING handouts I gave you
- looking at global reading skills from Insight into IELTS Units 1, 2 and 3
- sorting out 'problems' with Task 1 writing (especially the Academics)
- checking out websites - the Hong Poly one at http://www.elc.polyu.edu.hk/ielts is GREAT for all FOUR skills!
- looking at old weblogs especially http://www.ieltsdream.blogspot.com/ -the best weblog of the past two years
- watching Brazil play Argentina or the UAE against Japan - even Iraq vs Australia [yep, football is one of my passions, OK then, so what are YOU passionate about]?
Former students, a question: "Indeed, did the IELTS prep course 'wash back' into your English performance at work / studies apart from the needs of the actual exam?" What I am getting at, is that this focus on using correct, complex English appropriately gave you confidence in that you have the knowledge and the power to communicate successfully in your speaking and writing as well as to understand more effectively what you read and listen to - didn't it?
I promise not to nag or harass you, ieltscommunity21 (i-21). I will invite those who have not joined the weblog for the FINAL time now. Thereafter I will disown such uncommitted potential bloggers. For the i-21seven who have joined the blog, let's hear from more than just Saif, Yasser, Vladimir, Omar and Faisal.
Bye for now
Have fun - that's an order!
